POOL & GARDEN
The 16 x 5.5m pool is the centre piece of the unique luxury Ubud villa. At one end of the pool is a Bale (gazebo), an ideal place to have a light meal, relax or simply enjoy the views. The villa is entered via an impressive open-air living room, complete with a soaring roof and an upper gallery on either side. Ocean breezes keep this welcoming living space delightfully fresh and cool.

It is simply furnished with large and comfortable cream sofas, ottomans, and a pair of carved coffee tables from Timor, together with a primitive Timorese wooden statue. A floating Yogya stone staircase leads to the upper floor, and a colourful framed patchwork of painted wood brings a splash of colour to the wall. This tropical room is open on two sides – on the seaward side is the garden, swimming pool and the ocean, while on the inland side is an ornamental pond presided over by a ‘floating’ 2.5-metre-high Buddha statue. In another direction, a line of palm tress and jungle follows the path of a river.

Entered from the open-air living space via antique double doors from Java, the spacious lounge features three sets of sliding glass doors on two sides, which maximise the views and allow for the cross ventilation of sea breezes. Alternatively, these doors can be closed for air-conditioned comfort. Furnished with an L-shaped segmented sofa, ottomans and a coffee table handcrafted from coffee wood, the room is equipped with a sophisticated Harman/Kardon music system presenting surround sound with seven speakers and a wide choice of music. Garden

There are gardens on all sides of the villa, including the Ganesha garden, and the Sumba garden, which is distinguished by a cluster of enchanting statues from Sumba. The entrance garden showcases an ornamental pond, presided over by a towering Buddha statue. The front garden is dominated by the swimming pool and a helipad rests to one side, for guests who choose to arrive in style with a thrilling helicopter ride along Bali’s dramatic coastline. The garden is just footsteps away from the beach on an elevated buff, 13 metres above sea level. The beach is good for surfing although the strong currents make it dangerous for swimming. A walk along the beach at sunset is delightful.

The Swimming Pool

The enticing 27 x 11 meter swimming pool is ideal for swimming laps, it is curved on one side, following the contours of the terraced garden, and there is a shelf at the inner edge, which is a nice place for relaxing in cool shallow water.

There is also hanging space, a fitted sideboard, wooden statues from Kalimantan, and a desk next to a wide window, overlooking the ricefields and Mt Batukau. There is a broad sunny terrace at the front of this room, offering wonderful views of the coastline and the night sky. Accessed by glass doors, the ensuite bathroom is light and airy, long and spacious, with picture windows positioned on three sides to maximise the stunning views. The bathroom is fitted with double washbasins, mirrors, a toilet, and double rainshowers.

Toraja The Toraja guestroom is located on the upper floor overlooking the ocean. Accessed via sliding glass doors, it features a soaring roof and is furnished with a kingsize bed, oriented towards the sea. There is also a pair of funky stone pebble lamps, artefacts from Toraja in Sulawesi, and a dressing area and hanging space behind the bed.The adjoining sunny, open-air bathroom is bordered by Yogya stone walls for privacy, yet still offers views of the ricefields and mountains. Asmat The Asmat guestroom is located on the ground floor facing the ocean and a pretty corner of the garden with a collection of stone statues from Sumba. The room features glass doors on three sides. It is furnished with a kingsize bed, coffee wood lamps, a colourful painting, and a shelf and storage unit immediately behind the bed. The adjoining garden bathroom is fitted with a bathtub for two with a huge, cream terrazzo surround, twin ceramic washbasins, a walk-in raindrop shower with the additional provision of a handheld shower, carved wall mirrors and a toilet hidden behind a low louvre door. The private garden features a small lawn, planted with torch ginger, shrubs and palms.

Dayak The Dayak guestroom is a spacious family room on the upper floor facing the ocean. It furnished with two kingsize beds and features hanging and storage space, and two sets of sliding glass doors at the front. The room is decorated with artefacts from the Borneo’s legendary headhunters, the Dayak tribesmen, who inhabit Kalimantan’s deep interior highlands. The ensuite bathroom is the same as the bathroom adjoining the Toraja guestroom.

Agung The Agung guestroom is located in the single-storey wing with views of the mountains and ricefields. It is furnished with twin beds that can be pushed together, and features built-in hanging space in one corner and storage shelves behind the bed. It is named after Mt Agung, Bali’s highest and most sacred volcano, which can be seen from this bedroom on clear days, especially in the mornings and evenings. A painting of the mountain adorns one wall. Sliding glass doors open to the gardens on two sides of the room. The pretty garden bathroom is fitted with twin washbasins, a toilet and a raindrop shower that is open to the stars. The garden is planted with an ancient frangipani tree.

Ganesha The Ganesha twin-bedded guestroom and ensuite bathroom is located in the single storey wing with views of the mountains and ricefields, and its a mirror version of the Agung guestroom. It is named after the Ganesha Statue in the adjoining garden. Ganesha is the elephant headed Hindu God of making things happen and the remover of obstacles.

Dining and Living Area

As you enter the property you face a circular stonewall structure and a pond that snakes it way past the lounge and dining areas. The stonewall is the structure that holds the stunning circular Alang Alang roof. Crossing a wooden bridge you enter into the dining area. A wooden teak table and seating for six graces this area and beside the pond, with its lush tropical garden are two comfortable chairs and a large wooden table designed as a chess set to while away the hours, challenging your opponent.

A wooden deck leads off from the dining area and two sun lounges and coffee table are placed there facing the kidney shaped pool and beautiful bale on the opposite side.

A wall unit that runs the length of the sofa cleverly segregates the living and dining areas. This cabinet acts as a sideboard and storage area with different art pieces being displayed.

Behind the wall is a semi circular concrete structure that acts as a sofa. Cream coloured seat and backrest cushions are accentuated with orange and terracotta scatter cushions. On the wall behind the sofa, is a painting of a Thai dancer. In the front of the sofa is a round mahogany coffee table which rests on a floor rug covering a white tiled floor. Wooden slated windows provide fresh air and an air conditioner is also available. Guests can use at their leisure the TV, DVD or stereo system that are to be found in the living area.

Kitchen

A carved wooden architrave graces the doorway that leads into the kitchen. Both a wet and dry kitchen is available for guests to use. The kitchen is fully equipped with crockery and cutlery, gas hotplates and fridge.

Bedrooms

There are 3 air-conditioned bedrooms in the villa and each has its own en-suite. Each bedroom is located at a different end of the complex so privacy is maintained if you come with other couples or older children.

As you traverse the pathway from the main entry you pass a display of two large surfboards. This leads to the first bedroom with its wooden shutters and french doors. Outside the room is a 2 seater, single chair and coffee table to enjoy the view of the pool and relax overlooking the garden or while reading a book.

A four-poster king sized bed with white sheers attached to each poster and a brown silk bedspread with gold trimmings along the bottom and an elephant at the centre of the bedspread, adds ambience to the room. A TV, DVD, writing desk as well as a water cooler for cold or hot water and tea and coffee making facilities are all available in all the bedrooms. A low-lying divan rests on the wooden parapet floor with cushions to lounge on. Beautiful stone sculptures grace the walls of the bedroom and bathroom.

The outdoor shower attached to this room has a wonderful display of seashells set into recessed wall frames. A terrazzo bathtub allows you to unwind after a busy day shopping.

Bedroom two is located behind the spa treatment room and is a surprise awaiting you. With its own rectangular pool and bale it presents as another property, while still being attached to Apsara Villa. The turquoise blue of the water is reflected in the cushioned seating within the bale opposite the pool. Additionally two wooden sun lounges with the same colour cushion seating are located on the other side of the pool near the bedroom.

The outdoor area before you reach the bedroom is undercover and has an outdoor sink with cupboards below. A small chair, a two seater and round table are by the bedroom door and overlook the pool area. Balinese artworks are seen on walls and on the cabinetry located both inside and out.

The bedroom is the same colour and design as the first bedroom with king sized bed. A doorway leads to the outdoor shower, and undercover terrazzo bath overlooks an indoor wooden divan that is covered in brown fabric with scatter cushions in brown. Double basins and a large mirror are nearby the bath.

Bedroom three differs slightly in that it has a black settee resting against the bottom of the bed. Colours and style follow through from the other bedrooms. The outdoor shower and undercover terrazzo bath gaze out onto a lush garden. Double basins and a wooden open framed cabinet to the left display a number of ornaments and objects adding to the artworks throughout this splendid villa. The tropical garden is directly in front of this villa adding to its privacy and has the sound of running water nearby from the water features and pond.

There are two pools at this property. The main one is kidney shaped and located between the two bedrooms and outside of the living and dining room. Bedrooms 1 and 2 on the ground floor are each accessed via sliding glass doors from the pool deck. The rooms are mirror versions of one another, featuring marble floors, ensuite bathrooms and walk-in, well-lit dressing rooms. Each of these bedrooms is furnished with a king size bed draped in snowy netting, a desk and chair, bedside lamps and night tables. Each ensuite bathroom features a non-slip acid marble floor inset with patterns, twin glass washbowls, a walk-in monsoon shower, toilet, and large sunken bathtub with an open roof to one side to create an open air feel. The slate walls, Palimanan stonework and pebbled surrounds present a multitude of textures. Bedroom 4 is positioned upstairs, and is furnished with a king bed under a soaring roof. It has a closed-in dressing area and views to the beach from a side window. The bathroom is smaller but nevertheless fitted with a standing monsoon shower over the bathtub. The cream walls in the bedrooms are adorned with artwork and there are some interesting local artefacts. Each room is equipped with a safe deposit box, and flat-screen satellite-channel TV and DVD player.

The generously-sized living and dining room has a marble floor and folding glass doors that open to the pool deck, offering guests the choice of air-conditioned comfort (with two, wall-mounted air-conditioners) or tropical open air living. The living area is furnished with a huge, comfortable L-shaped sofa and a glass-topped coffee table, while the dining area is positioned to one side and furnished with a large dining table, which can accommodate twelve people. Completed in August 2010, the contemporary Balinese architecture of Villa Joss features a living room and dining room pavilion, a four bedroom pavilion, an entertainment room and business centre, and an open air ‘bale’ lounge pavilion in the spacious gardens with a 16-metre swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi. The architect’s other work can be seen in some of Seminyak’s finest venues including Ku De Ta. Villa Joss is named after the owner’s daughter.

The fine art traditions of Bali have been highlighted with care in Villa Joss. Upon entering the main gate, guests are greeted by a stone relief carving of Balinese Gamelan musicians which dates back to the Majapahit Kingdom’s retreat from Java to Bali in the 1500′s.

The original carving is found in one of Bali’s oldest temples, Pura Dalem in Desa Singepadu Tengah, and was reproduced at Villa Joss by a family of artisans from Batu Bulan, the most famous stone-carving village in Bali. The gorgeous entrance to Villa Joss involves a covered walkway bordered by lotus ponds with Koi fish; all draped in a hanging garden of green vines leading up to a serene seated stone Buddha set against a cascading waterfall. The bedrooms and living spaces of the 4 bedroom Villa Joss showcase beautiful fine art paintings and limited-edition litho prints by some of Indonesia’s best-known artists. Each bathroom features a stone relief carving detailing different aspects of the main temple carving inside the main gate.

The walled garden and graceful interiors offer an abundance of space, natural light and separate places to relax. Children can enjoy a BOSE surround sound movie on the 48″ flat screen TV in the entertainment pavilion while one group of adults enjoy some reading in the living room, and another group of adults lounge, surf the internet or watch sports on the 45″ flat screen TV in the garden ‘bale’. The pool deck is punctuated with big pots of flowering lotus. The interiors of the villa have been lovingly furnished, accented with colour and completed with delightful attention to detail.

The owners have made every effort to employ ‘Green Friendly’ technologies in the construction of Villa Joss including low energy lighting and a combination of solar and low energy convection water heating systems. Similarly, with the exception of certain high end imported fittings and equipment that were not available in Indonesia, every effort was made to use local materials and craftsmen. All furniture was locally made in Bali and Java.

Accommodations

There are four bedroom suites with polished teak floors and cabinetry in the two-storey sleeping pavilion. Three are furnished with king size beds and one with twin beds (which can be put together with a specially designed top mattress). Each has an ensuite bathroom, as well as a spacious dressing area with plenty of hanging space. Each bedroom is equipped with a 42” satellite-channel flat screen TV plus a DVD player (upon request), air-conditioning, ceiling fan, safe deposit box and WiFi internet connection. The bedroom walls are adorned with beautiful original paintings by famous Indonesian artists as detailed under the heading “The Art & Artists”.

Master Bedroom

The Master Bedroom Suite is located on ground level with sliding glass doors opening onto a covered terrace beside the swimming pool. It is accented in green and gold with a warm teakwood floor and a large bright painting by Made Gunawan of the Elephant God – Ganesh – surrounded by elfish characters dancing and playing. This spacious bedroom is furnished with a king-size ornately hand carved four poster bed with white shear curtains, copper bedside lamps and a 42” satellite-channel TV positioned on a matching cabinet. There is a spacious seat at the foot of the bed and a teak cabinet dressing area with plenty of hanging space.

Joss Bedroom Suite

The Joss Bedroom Suite also sits on the ground level with a teak wood floor and sliding glass doors opening onto a covered terrace beside the swimming pool. The room presents a fun and flamboyant colour scheme with a red lacquered cabinet, matching red lamps and the striking ‘Made Pejeng’ oil painting by the renowned artist Krijono. It features a hand carved four-poster bed draped in white shear curtains – and pink shears are available upon request to thrill any princesses staying in the Joss Bedroom Suite! There is a cushioned bench at the foot of the bed, a 42” satellite-channel TV and a teak cabinet dressing area with plenty of hanging space.

Mount Agung Suite

The Mount Agung Suite is the upstairs master, with a teakwood floor, a green theme, and sliding glass doors that open onto a delightful shared balcony offering big sky views of Bali’s carefree kites flying over the treetops. The section of balcony immediately outside the bedroom is furnished with a table and four chairs, making it a lovely spot for breakfast. The room has a king-size bed with matching cushioned bench, side tables with white woven aluminium bedside lamps and is equipped with a 42” satellite-channel TV. The “Odalan” oil painting on the wall by Atjeng wall features a colourful Balinese beachside ceremony – much like those guests can enjoy during their stay in Bali. There is also a large dressing area with plenty of hanging space.

Batu Balig Suite

The Batu Belig Suite is also located upstairs, accented in gold and copper, with a teak wood floor and sliding glass doors that open onto the shared balcony. The balcony is furnished with a comfy upholstered sofa and chairs, and offers views of the greenery and rooftops of Batu Belig village. This bedroom offers the facility of twin beds (which alternatively can be joined with a specially designed top mattress) and a 42” satellite-channel TV positioned on a matching dark wood cabinet. The “Ke Pura” oil painting by Maria Tjui features a beautiful Balinese temple ceremony. There is also a large dressing area with plenty of hanging space.

Ensuite Bathroom

All four spacious ensuite bathrooms are fashioned in non-slip marble floors with matching polished marble walls. All are fitted with walk-in monsoon showers, large washbasins on polished black granite vanity units (twin washbasins on the ground floor) and large format toilets. Each of the two downstairs bathrooms feature a spacious indoor section with floor to ceiling glass walls looking out to a private outdoor garden shower area. Each of the downstairs bathrooms also feature a huge bathtub carved out of a solid block of marble, as well as two showers – one indoors with views of the private garden, and one shower under the sky in the open-air garden courtyard with high walls for privacy and a pebbled floor planted with heliconias and giant taro.
